Overview

Glutaminyl-peptide cyclotransferase (QPCT) is a zinc-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the intramolecular cyclization of N-terminal glutamine and glutamic acid residues in peptides to form pyroglutamate. This post-translational modification is crucial for the maturation and function of various peptide hormones and secretory proteins. Its dysregulation links it to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease due to its role in amyloid plaque formation. It serves both physiological roles (hormone maturation) and pathological roles (tumor progression/inflammation).
