Glutamyl aminopeptidase (ENPEP), also known as Aminopeptidase A or CD249, is a zinc-dependent, membrane-bound metalloprotease that specifically removes N-terminal glutamic acid and aspartic acid residues from peptides and proteins. It plays a crucial role in the renin-angiotensin system by converting angiotensin II to angiotensin III, thereby influencing blood pressure regulation and vascular function. ENPEP is highly expressed in the small intestine and kidney, and its activity is modulated by calcium ions. It has been implicated in hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and cancer progression.
