Target intelligence / Profile preview
The glutathione biosynthesis pathway is an ATP-dependent metabolic process responsible for the production of glutathione (GSH). GSH is critical for antioxidant defense, detoxification, redox homeostasis, and cell proliferation. The pathway involves two enzymatic steps: the formation of γ-glutamylcysteine from glutamate and cysteine, catalyzed by glutamate–cysteine ligase (GCL), and the addition of glycine to γ-glutamylcysteine to form glutathione, catalyzed by glutathione synthetase (GS).
