Glutathione oxidation" refers to the conversion of reduced glutathione (GSH), a central intracellular antioxidant, to its oxidized disulfide form (GSSG) during the neutralization of reactive oxygen species and other oxidants[3][1]. This redox process is fundamental in cellular defense against oxidative damage, regulates protein function via S-glutathionylation, and is a key indicator of cellular oxidative status[3][1]. The GSH/GSSG ratio is a widely used biomarker of oxidative stress, which is altered in numerous disease states, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disorders[3][1][9]. Enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase (catalyzes oxidation) and glutathione reductase (catalyzes reduction of GSSG back to GSH) orchestrate this dynamic process[7][8][3]. Disruption of glutathione oxidation/reduction cycles contributes to redox imbalance and pathology in diverse diseases[3][1][9].
