Glutathione peroxidase 6 (GPX6) is a member of the glutathione peroxidase family of enzymes, which play a central role in the cellular antioxidant defense system by catalyzing the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides, thus preventing cellular oxidative damage. GPX6 is a selenoprotein in humans, containing selenocysteine at its active site, and is mainly expressed in embryonic tissues and the olfactory epithelium; in rodents, the homolog contains cysteine instead of selenocysteine. The exact physiological function of GPX6 remains poorly defined, but emerging data suggest a role in the cellular response to oxidative stress and possible involvement in embryonic development and olfactory tissue signaling. Disease associations are limited and not yet fully established. There are no known drugs that specifically interact with GPX6, nor is it established as a clinical biomarker or drug target at this time[1][2][3].
