The glutathione peroxidase (GPx) pathway is a critical cellular antioxidant defense mechanism that protects cells from oxidative damage by reducing hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and organic hydroperoxides to water or corresponding alcohols, using reduced glutathione (GSH) as an electron donor. This pathway is essential for maintaining redox homeostasis and preventing the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can otherwise damage DNA, proteins, and lipids. Dysregulation or deficiency in components of this pathway has been linked with increased susceptibility to diseases involving oxidative stress.
