Overview

Glutathione peroxidase pseudogene 1 (GPX1P1) is annotated as a pseudogene, meaning it is a non-functional segment of DNA that resembles the sequence of the functional glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1) gene but does not encode an active enzyme[3][6]. While the true GPX1 gene encodes a selenoenzyme involved in antioxidant defense and cellular redox homeostasis, GPX1P1 does not code for any active protein and therefore has no known enzymatic or regulatory function and is not used as a therapeutic target[6][3]. Pseudogenes such as GPX1P1 may arise by gene duplication or retrotransposition and typically accumulate mutations that prevent expression or proper function. Some genomic resources report GPX1P1 alongside the functional GPX1 gene because of their sequence similarity, but only the gene on chromosome 3 encodes the functional glutathione peroxidase 1 enzyme, while loci on other chromosomes (such as those corresponding to GPX1P1) have been confirmed as pseudogenes and do not produce an active enzyme[6][3].
