Glutathione S-transferase (GST)

Target
GST
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Transferase, Phase II metabolic enzyme, Detoxification enzyme
01

Overview

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a family of enzymes involved in detoxification and cellular protection against oxidative stress. They catalyze the conjugation of glutathione (GSH) to various electrophilic compounds, facilitating their removal from the cell. GSTs also possess peroxidase and isomerase activities and can modulate signaling pathways. Certain GST isoforms, particularly GSTP, are implicated in cancer development and chemoresistance. They are considered important targets for cancer therapy and other diseases involving oxidative stress.
