Overview

Glutathione S-transferase A pseudogene 1 (GSTAP1, GSTA6P) is a human pseudogene belonging to the alpha class of the glutathione S-transferase gene family. Unlike functional glutathione S-transferase enzymes, which play important roles in detoxification processes through conjugation of glutathione to a range of substrates, GSTAP1 does not produce a functional protein product and lacks catalytic activity. Pseudogenes such as GSTA6P are generally regarded as non-functional segments of genomic DNA that are similar in sequence to known genes but are not translated into active proteins[1]. GSTAP1 is therefore not considered a therapeutic target, does not contribute directly to any known biological processes, and has no known role in disease or drug interactions. The human glutathione S-transferase (GST) gene family contains several active genes and a number of pseudogenes, including GSTA6P/GSTAP1[1]. Pseudogenes may arise from gene duplications or mutations and are generally annotated as “reserved” or “non-functional” in gene catalogs[1]. There is nothing functionally or clinically actionable about GSTA6P/GSTAP1: it is not a drug target, lacks protein expression, and has no direct implication in pharmacology or disease pathways. The only issue is that it can appear in target listings due to similarity with functional GST genes, potentially leading to confusion, but its status as a pseudogene makes it biologically and clinically irrelevant[1].
