Glutathione S-transferase alpha 5 (GSTA5) is a cytosolic enzyme belonging to the alpha class of glutathione S-transferases. GSTs catalyze the conjugation of reduced glutathione (GSH) to a wide variety of electrophilic substrates, including carcinogens, mutagens, and environmental toxins, facilitating their detoxification and elimination from the cell[1][7]. GSTA5 is encoded by the GSTA5 gene located on chromosome 6p12.2 and shares significant homology with other alpha-class GSTs[1][2]. However, as noted in recent literature, the specific biochemical function, substrate specificity, and disease associations of GSTA5 remain uncharacterized[2]. GST enzymes, more broadly, play important roles in cancer biology, pharmacology, and protection against oxidative stress, but GSTA5’s direct contribution to these physiological processes is yet to be clarified[1][2][7].
For GST family, typical mechanism is detoxification via glutathione conjugation; drugs affecting GSTs generally act as inhibitors or inducers of enzyme activity
