Target intelligence / Profile preview

Glutathione S-transferase theta-4 (GSTT4)

Target
GSTT4
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Related family: Cytosolic glutathione S-transferases (enzyme superfamily, theta class)
01

Overview

Glutathione S-transferase theta-4 (GSTT4) is part of the theta class of cytosolic glutathione S-transferases, a family of enzymes involved in phase II detoxification by conjugating glutathione to various electrophilic compounds. However, in humans, GSTT4 is a pseudogene (also called glutathione S-transferase theta pseudogene 1, GSTTP1) and does not encode an active enzyme. Functional GST theta enzymes (such as GSTT1 and GSTT2) do exist in humans and contribute to xenobiotic metabolism and cellular protection against oxidative stress, but GSTT4 retains no catalytic or therapeutic relevance due to its pseudogene status
