Target intelligence / Profile preview
Glycemic markers are a group of clinical laboratory measurements used to assess and monitor an individual's glucose homeostasis and are essential for the diagnosis and long-term management of diabetes mellitus (StatPearls, 2023). The most widely utilized marker, Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), provides a weighted average of blood glucose levels over the preceding 2–3 months by measuring the non-enzymatic glycation of the hemoglobin beta chain (NIH, 2023). Other markers like fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) are used to evaluate acute glycemic status or postprandial glucose spikes, respectively (PubMed, 2021). These markers are not therapeutic targets themselves; rather, they serve as the primary clinical endpoints for evaluating the efficacy and safety of glucose-lowering therapies such as metformin, SGLT2 inhibitors, and insulin (ADA, 2024). Accuracy of these markers can be compromised by physiological conditions like iron deficiency anemia, pregnancy, or end-stage renal disease, which may necessitate the use of alternative indicators like fructosamine or glycated albumin (PubMed, 2022).
Not applicable. Glycemic markers are clinical measures of glucose levels and metabolic control rather than biological structures that drugs bind to or modulate directly.
