Overview

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate is a three-carbon phosphorylated sugar (aldotriose) that serves as an important metabolic intermediate in glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, the Calvin cycle in photosynthesis, tryptophan biosynthesis, and thiamine metabolism. It is formed from the cleavage of fructose 1,6-bisphosphate and can interconvert with dihydroxyacetone phosphate. It is not itself a protein, enzyme, receptor, or other classic drug target, but rather a substrate or product in central metabolic pathways in all domains of life. The correct drug target associated with this molecule is glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), an enzyme that acts on G3P.
