Overview

The term "GAPDH divergent transcript" (GAPDH-DT) refers to RNA molecules that are transcribed from the GAPDH gene locus in the direction opposite to the canonical mRNA. The existence of such divergent antisense transcripts has been demonstrated by strand-specific RNA-seq, showing that like many human genes, GAPDH produces low-level antisense and divergent RNA species from its transcription start site (TSS). Divergent transcripts may sometimes extend into neighboring genes and, in some cases, contribute to transcriptional regulation or chromatin states, but for GAPDH-DT there is no established biological function, molecular annotation, or therapeutic relevance. There is no evidence that GAPDH-DT is a unique, processed, or functional molecule analogous to well-characterized lncRNAs (such as GATA3-AS1). The scientific literature does not recognize GAPDH-DT as a canonical therapeutic target, biomarker, or molecular entity.
