Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogenes are non-functional genomic DNA sequences that are highly similar to the functional GAPDH gene, an essential enzyme in glycolysis. While the functional gene is located on chromosome 12 and widely studied for metabolic and "moonlighting" functions including roles in apoptosis, cytoskeletal organization, and regulation of inflammation[1][2][3][5], the pseudogenes do not produce active protein products and have no known physiological or pathological roles. The human genome contains numerous GAPDH-related pseudogenes due to evolutionary duplication events[7].
