Overview

GAPDHP17 (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 17) is a member of the GAPDH pseudogene family. It is a processed pseudogene (arising by retrotransposition) of the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) gene, a well-known housekeeping enzyme with key roles in glycolysis. As with most processed pseudogenes, GAPDHP17 is considered non-functional at the protein level due to disabling sequence changes, and does not encode a functional enzyme. There is no evidence that GAPDHP17 is transcribed or has a regulatory RNA function. Its main significance lies in its utility as a genomic marker and its inclusion in analyses of pseudogene evolution or gene family structure. Pseudogenes in general are sometimes found to be transcribed, and rare cases report regulatory roles (such as acting as competitive endogenous RNAs or microRNA sponges), but no such functions have been documented for GAPDHP17. The parent gene, GAPDH, is a crucial metabolic enzyme and sometimes studied as a target or biomarker, but GAPDHP17 itself does not share these roles. In summary, GAPDHP17 is a processed pseudogene of GAPDH with no evidence of protein-coding function, biological significance, or therapeutic targeting potential.
