Overview

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 19 (GAPDHP19) is a processed pseudogene found in the human genome. Pseudogenes are nonfunctional genomic sequences similar to known genes, typically arising from duplication or retrotransposition events that disable coding ability[1][3][5]. GAPDHP19 is one of many pseudogenes related to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), a key glycolytic enzyme. However, like most pseudogenes, GAPDHP19 does not encode a functional protein and is not involved in cellular metabolism or molecular signaling, nor is it a therapeutic target[1][3][5]. Its presence is used primarily as a record of genome evolution and retrotranspositional activity, especially since the GAPDH gene family is unusually rich in such pseudogenes. There is no established functional, drug-target, or disease-relevant role for GAPDHP19. GAPDH pseudogenes are notable for their abundance in the human and rodent genomes, but they generally undergo sequence degradation over time and do not contribute directly to protein production[1][2][3]. Some pseudogenes in general can have regulatory, decoy, or other functional roles, but there is no such evidence for GAPDHP19 specifically[1][3]. GAPDHP19 is a correctly designated processed pseudogene in the human genome, functionally inert, with no direct biological, therapeutic, or disease relevance, and thus not a biological drug target[5].
