Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 2 (GAPDHP2) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome[1][3]. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences similar to known genes but are non-functional due to accumulated mutations that prevent the production of an active protein product[2][3]. GAPDHP2 originated from the retrotransposition (RNA-mediated duplication) of the mRNA from its parental gene, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), which is a key enzyme in glycolysis[3]. While GAPDH itself is involved in multiple biological processes—including glycolysis, DNA repair, and transcription regulation—its pseudogenes like GAPDHP2 do not code for a functional protein and are not involved in cellular metabolism or known disease mechanisms[1][3]. There is no evidence that GAPDHP2 acts as a non-coding RNA with regulatory function, and it is not a known therapeutic target or biomarker[1][3]. GAPDH has an unusually large number of processed pseudogenes in the human genome, which are mainly evolutionary relics and do not encode active protein[3]. As such, GAPDHP2 is not relevant for targeted drug development, clinical biomarkers, or therapeutic intervention[1][3].
