Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 21 (GAPDHP21)

Target
GAPDHP21
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Other (not functional enzyme, not receptor, not transporter, etc.)
01

Overview

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 21 (GAPDHP21) is a non-protein-coding pseudogene located in the human genome. It is a relic of the gene encoding the glycolytic enzyme GAPDH, having arisen via retrotransposition or gene duplication events over evolutionary time. GAPDHP21 itself does not encode a functional enzyme or protein and does not participate in glycolysis or other known biological pathways. The human genome contains dozens of GAPDH-related pseudogenes, reflecting the high retrotranspositional activity and diverse functions of the parent GAPDH gene, but individual pseudogenes like GAPDHP21 are mainly considered evolutionary remnants without specific biological or clinical relevance[1][3][4].

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 21
02

Mechanism of action

Not applicable. No drugs target this pseudogene.

03

Biological functions

None documented for GAPDHP21 itself. As a pseudogene, it does not encode a functional product nor participate in biological processes. Its parent gene, GAPDH, is involved in glycolysis, but GAPDHP21 has no reported activity.
04

Disease associations

None for GAPDHP21 specifically. Pseudogenes rarely play direct roles in disease; any connection is indirect, such as through genome structure or potential regulatory RNA, but there is no evidence for this pseudogene.
05

Safety considerations

None relevant to GAPDHP21; as a pseudogene, there are no therapeutic safety issues.
06

Interacting drugs

None. No drugs are reported to act on or interact with GAPDHP21.
07

Biomarkers

None reported for GAPDHP21.
