Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 33 (GAPDHP33)

Target
GAPDHP33
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Processed pseudogene
01

Overview

GAPDHP33 is classified as a processed pseudogene of the functional glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) gene. Pseudogenes are genomic segments similar to normal genes but are generally noncoding due to disruptive mutations and lack the ability to produce functional proteins. The human genome contains dozens of GAPDH-related pseudogenes, many of which are highly homologous to the parental GAPDH gene. They are non-functional remnants arising from duplication or retrotransposition events. GAPDHP33 has no known protein product, no enzyme activity, and is not implicated as a therapeutic or diagnostic target. Some pseudogenes, including certain GAPDH pseudogenes, may be transcribed or may have regulatory roles, but the majority do not contribute to disease biology or drug targeting. The abundance of GAPDH pseudogenes can confound RNA measurement experiments, leading to non-specific amplification in RT-PCR assays. No direct disease association, drug interaction, or biomarker application exists for GAPDHP33, and its relevance is limited to genomic annotation as a noncoding, nonfunctional DNA segment. GAPDHP33 is not a true protein-coding gene, receptor, or enzyme. It is a non-functional, processed pseudogene derived from the widely expressed metabolic enzyme GAPDH, with no direct biological function, disease association, or therapeutic relevance in humans.
