Overview

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 36 (GAPDHP36) is a processed pseudogene found in the human genome, derived by retrotransposition of mRNA originating from the functional GAPDH gene[3]. Unlike the active enzyme GAPDH, which is essential for glycolysis and multiple non-metabolic roles, GAPDHP36 does not produce a protein and has no established biological or therapeutic function. GAPDH pseudogenes such as GAPDHP36 are abundant in mammalian genomes, especially in humans and rodents, and reflect the evolutionary history of the GAPDH gene family[3]. The active, functional form is "glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase" (GAPDH), an essential glycolytic enzyme, but GAPDHP36 is just one of several dozen human pseudogenes for GAPDH[3][1]. This target is not suitable for therapeutic modulation or drug development because it does not encode a viable target molecule[3].
