Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 37" (GAPDHP37) is a human genomic sequence that resembles the gene for glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) but is classified as a pseudogene. Pseudogenes arise from duplication or retrotransposition events but contain mutations that prevent them from producing a functional protein. GAPDH itself is a well-studied enzyme involved in glycolysis and numerous other cellular processes, but GAPDHP37 does not encode an active enzyme and is not considered a therapeutic target. Many similarly named pseudogenes exist in the human genome and typically have no direct functional, therapeutic, or diagnostic role[3]. While the functional GAPDH gene is a canonical housekeeping gene and has been widely studied regarding cell metabolism and various moonlighting functions[1][3][4], pseudogenes like GAPDHP37 are usually present as nonfunctional relics and do not produce the active enzyme, have no known roles in human diseases, are not targeted by drugs, and are not suitable as biomarkers or therapeutic targets. GAPDHP37 is a nonfunctional pseudogene and not a protein or receptor. It should not be confused with the active GAPDH enzyme, which is a legitimate therapeutic and research target involved in energy metabolism and apoptosis[1][3]. No drugs, safety concerns, or biological functions are linked to GAPDHP37. There is nothing to suggest GAPDHP37 is a misspelled name, but its use in a context implying an active molecular target would be misleading[3].
