GAPDHP39 is a processed pseudogene related to the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) gene. As a pseudogene, GAPDHP39 does not encode a functional protein product and has no established biological or therapeutic role. It arises from a duplication of the functional GAPDH gene but accumulates mutations that prevent expression of the normal active enzyme. Pseudogenes are typically non-functional genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but generally lack the ability to encode a protein due to disabling mutations or disruptions in regulatory elements. The functional, protein-coding gene is "glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase" (GAPDH), which is a classical metabolic enzyme and a recognized molecular target in glycolysis and other cellular functions. GAPDHP39 itself does not serve as a therapeutic target, does not participate in disease processes as a functional molecule, and is primarily of interest in genomics studies or as a reference in gene family annotations.
