Overview

GAPDHP52 is a member of the large family of GAPDH pseudogenes found in the human genome[5][1][4][6]. These pseudogenes have sequences highly similar to the functional GAPDH gene but contain disabling mutations (such as frameshifts or stop codons) that prevent them from encoding an active protein[1][4]. They are classified as *processed pseudogenes* because they originate from reverse-transcribed mRNA of the parental GAPDH gene, inserted back into the genome, and then accumulate inactivating mutations[1]. The parent gene, **glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH)**, is an essential glycolytic enzyme, but only one functional GAPDH gene exists in humans (on chromosome 12), while dozens of non-functional pseudogenes—including GAPDHP52—are scattered across the genome[4][6]. Large-scale analysis has shown that most GAPDH pseudogenes, including GAPDHP52, are not transcriptionally active and do not participate in enzyme activity, regulation, or known disease processes, though rare pseudogenes from other families can sometimes have biological roles via RNA interference or regulatory effects, for which there is no direct evidence in the case of GAPDHP52[1][3].
