Overview

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 53 (GAPDHP53) is a non-functional DNA sequence in the human genome derived from the functional glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) gene. GAPDH is a key enzyme in glycolysis, but pseudogenes such as GAPDHP53 have accumulated disabling mutations and do not encode a functional protein. GAPDHP53 is one of a large family of GAPDH pseudogenes found throughout the human genome, many of which are processed pseudogenes resulting from retrotransposition events. While most pseudogenes are transcriptionally inactive, some may be transcribed or participate in regulatory processes (e.g., as non-coding RNAs or microRNA decoys), but there is no evidence that GAPDHP53 has such functions. It is not considered a therapeutic target, nor are there known drugs, mechanisms, biomarkers, or safety concerns associated with it.
