Overview

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 54 (GAPDHP54) belongs to a large family of processed pseudogenes related to the functional GAPDH gene, a key glycolytic enzyme. Pseudogenes are noncoding genomic DNA sequences that resemble normal genes but are typically nonfunctional due to mutations or lack of regulatory elements. The human genome contains dozens of GAPDH-related pseudogenes, mostly originating via retrotransposition (copying of an mRNA back into the genome). GAPDHP54 is one such processed pseudogene and does not encode a functional enzyme nor participate in metabolic pathways or drug interactions. It is not a target for therapeutic drugs. GAPDH pseudogenes as a class can confound PCR-based assays due to sequence similarity with the functional gene. The parent gene, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), is a fundamental glycolytic enzyme, whereas GAPDHP54 (and its many relatives) are simply its evolutionary by-products with no known physiological function. Occasionally, pseudogenes may affect gene regulation or generate noncoding RNAs, but there is no evidence that GAPDHP54 plays such roles. Summary: GAPDHP54 is a non-functional processed pseudogene of the glycolytic enzyme GAPDH, is not a target for therapeutics or drugs, and has no direct biological, disease, or pharmacological relevance.

Mechanism of action

None

03

Biological functions

None (as a pseudogene, GAPDHP54 does not encode a functional protein)
04

Disease associations

None directly; pseudogenes can play roles in gene regulation or serve as evolutionary markers but GAPDHP54 itself is not linked to disease
