Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 74 (GAPDHP74)

Target
GAPDHP74
Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene)
01

Overview

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase pseudogene 74 (GAPDHP74) is a processed pseudogene, meaning it originated from retrotransposition of mRNA from its parent gene, GAPDH, but does not encode a functional enzyme or receptor[1]. GAPDH itself is a highly conserved glycolytic enzyme with numerous cellular functions, but its pseudogenes, including GAPDHP74, are nonfunctional genomic copies found in multiple species[1]. The high number of GAPDH pseudogenes in the human genome reflects the retrotranspositional activity of the parent gene, but these pseudogenes, including GAPDHP74, do not have recognized coding or regulatory roles, nor are they considered therapeutic or diagnostic targets[1].
