Overview

Glycerol kinase (GK) converts glycerol to glycerol 3-phosphate, the first committed step in de novo glycerolipid synthesis. It is primarily expressed in the liver and kidney and plays a crucial role in glycerolipid metabolism. In the triglyceride synthesis pathway, it provides the glycerol-3-phosphate backbone that is acylated to form triacylglycerols.
