Glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase domain-containing protein 2 (GDPD2) is a membrane-bound enzyme belonging to the glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase family. It functions at the cell surface as an extracellular phospholipase C, selectively hydrolyzing glycerophosphoinositol and lysophospholipids to produce inositol 1-phosphate and glycerol, thereby modulating lipid mediator balance. This catalytic activity is essential for processes such as osteoblast differentiation and growth, and GDPD2’s dosage alteration has been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders. While it is mainly characterized as an enzyme, its activity is relevant to signaling pathways and may impact reproductive traits, making it relevant as a potential therapeutic target and biomarker in disease contexts
