Overview

Glycine-N-acyltransferase like 1 pseudogene 1 (GLYATL1P1) is a nonfunctional genomic DNA segment that shares sequence similarity with the glycine-N-acyltransferase like 1 gene but lacks the ability to encode a functional protein product. Pseudogenes arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events but acquire disabling mutations that prevent them from being expressed or functioning like their ancestral genes. While the majority of pseudogenes have no known biological function, a few can be transcribed and may play rare regulatory roles through RNA mechanisms, such as acting as microRNA decoys or sources of small interfering RNAs, but there is no evidence that GLYATL1P1 fulfills such a role. Therefore, GLYATL1P1 is not considered a receptor, enzyme, or other classical drug target.
