Overview

The glycine receptor alpha 1 subunit is a key component of the glycine receptor (GlyR), a ligand-gated ion channel that mediates fast inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. Mutations in GLRA1 are associated with hyperekplexia, a rare neurological disorder characterized by exaggerated startle responses due to impaired inhibitory neurotransmission.
