The glycine receptor alpha 1 subunit is a key component of the glycine receptor (GlyR), a ligand-gated ion channel that mediates fast inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. Mutations in GLRA1 are associated with hyperekplexia, a rare neurological disorder characterized by exaggerated startle responses due to impaired inhibitory neurotransmission.
Glycine binding increases chloride conductance, leading to membrane hyperpolarization and reduced neuronal excitability. Strychnine acts as an antagonist.
