Target intelligence / Profile preview

Glycine transporter type 1 (GlyT1)

Target
GlyT1
Molecular classification
Solute carrier family 6, Neurotransmitter:sodium symporter, Transporter
01

Overview

Glycine transporter type 1 (GlyT1) is a sodium- and chloride-dependent membrane protein responsible for the reuptake of glycine from the synaptic cleft, primarily in the central nervous system. GlyT1 plays a crucial role in regulating extracellular glycine concentrations, which directly impacts neurotransmission and NMDA receptor function. It is a therapeutic target for schizophrenia, cognitive disorders, and other neurological conditions.

02

Mechanism of action

Inhibition of GlyT1 increases extracellular synaptic glycine levels, potentiating NMDA receptor activity.
