Overview
Cell-surface glycans are complex carbohydrate structures covalently attached to proteins (glycoproteins), lipids (glycolipids), or proteoglycans on the exterior surface of cells. These molecules form a dense and dynamic layer known as the glycocalyx, which plays critical roles in cell-cell communication, signaling, adhesion, migration, immune response modulation, and disease progression. Alterations in cell-surface glycan structures are associated with cancer progression/metastasis, autoimmune diseases, and infectious diseases. Engineering or targeting specific glycans is an emerging therapeutic strategy.
