Glycogen (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Carbohydrate
01

Overview

Glycogen is a branched polysaccharide of glucose that serves as an energy reserve in many cell types, including epithelial cells. Its presence and amount within epithelial cells can be visualized using special histochemical stains, most notably the Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS) stain. In diagnostic pathology, it's used to assess normal physiology and pathological changes in tissues, particularly in infectious diseases, metabolic disorders, and tumor pathology.
