Glycogen Synthase 2 (GYS2) is an enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting step in hepatic glycogen synthesis. It transfers glucose from UDP-glucose to a growing chain of glycogen, forming α-1,4-glycosidic bonds. GYS2 is essential for maintaining normal blood glucose levels by allowing rapid mobilization of stored liver glycogen. Mutations in GYS2 cause Glycogen Storage Disease Type 0 (GSD0), leading to fasting hypoglycemia.
