Glycolysis is a central metabolic pathway that breaks down glucose (a six-carbon sugar) into two molecules of pyruvate (three-carbon compounds), generating energy in the form of ATP and NADH. This process occurs in the cytoplasm of nearly all living cells and can function under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
