Metabolic Pathway
01

Overview

Glycolysis is a central metabolic pathway that breaks down glucose (a six-carbon sugar) into two molecules of pyruvate (three-carbon compounds), generating energy in the form of ATP and NADH. This process occurs in the cytoplasm of nearly all living cells and can function under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Glycolysis is considered one of the most ancient and conserved metabolic pathways, essential for cellular energy production. Dysregulation or inherited defects in glycolytic enzymes can lead to various diseases including hemolytic anemia. Altered glycolytic activity plays a role in cancer metabolism (\"Warburg effect\"), diabetes mellitus, heart disease, among others.
