Overview

Glycophorin E is a presumed pseudogene member of the glycophorin family located on chromosome 4 and closely related to Glycophorin A and B. While the gene is transcribed, the corresponding protein is generally not detected in red blood cells and is not considered functionally significant. GYPE is notable for its role in the evolution and structural diversity of the MNS blood group gene cluster. Rearrangements involving GYPE, GYPA, and GYPB generate hybrid alleles, which can result in rare blood group phenotypes and have implications for transfusion medicine. However, unlike its relatives Glycophorin A and B, Glycophorin E is not a functional membrane protein, receptor, or drug target in humans[1][3][2][5][4].
