The gp91^phox subunit is a critical component of the phagocyte NADPH oxidase complex (cytochrome b_558). This enzyme complex is essential for the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), particularly superoxide, which plays a vital role in host defense mechanisms and cellular signaling. It mediates electron transfer from cytosolic NADPH to molecular oxygen across the membrane, resulting in superoxide production. Mutations in the gene encoding gp91^phox (CYBB) can cause chronic granulomatous disease.
