Target intelligence / Profile preview
Glycoprotein B (gB) is a highly conserved, essential viral fusion protein found in all herpesviruses. It mediates the fusion of the viral envelope with host cell membranes, enabling viral entry into target cells. gB also plays a role in virion assembly and egress. As a surface protein, gB is a target for neutralizing antibodies. Drugs and vaccines targeting gB are under development.
Conformational change exposes hydrophobic loops, which insert into the host cell membrane and drive membrane fusion.
