Overview

Glycoprotein E (gE) is a multifunctional, type I membrane glycoprotein found in several viruses, most notably the alphaherpesviruses such as Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and Herpes simplex virus (HSV). It plays essential roles in viral replication, cell-to-cell spread, immune evasion, and virion assembly. gE is indispensable for viral replication and cell-to-cell spread and is a primary target for anti-VZV antibodies. gE interacts with other viral proteins, notably gI, for proper function.
