Glycosaminoglycan

Molecular classification
Polysaccharide
01

Overview

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), also known as mucopolysaccharides, are long, linear, negatively charged polysaccharide molecules composed of repeating disaccharide units. They play crucial roles in structural support, cell signaling, and lubrication in various tissues. Their interactions with proteins are essential for diverse biological processes, and defects in their degradation lead to lysosomal storage disorders. Heparin, a highly sulfated GAG, is widely used as an anticoagulant.
