Glycosaminoglycan Fibers (GAG Fibers)

Target
GAG Fibers
Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Extracellular matrix component
01

Overview

Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) fibers are fibrous structures primarily composed of long, unbranched polysaccharides consisting of repeating disaccharide units. They are key components of the extracellular matrix in connective tissues, providing structural support, hydration, and mechanical resilience. Major types include hyaluronate, chondroitin sulfate, heparin, and keratan sulfate. While not direct drug targets themselves, their synthesis and degradation are implicated in various diseases, and some GAGs (e.g., heparin) are used as drugs. Defects in GAG metabolism lead to mucopolysaccharidoses.
