Overview
The glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer is a specialized carbohydrate-rich coating on the luminal surface of the bladder urothelium. It comprises proteoglycans with GAG chains such as heparan sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, dermatan sulfate, and hyaluronic acid. This layer acts as a protective barrier against pathogens, toxins, and mechanical injury. In bladder cancer, alterations in GAG composition correlate with invasiveness, tumor grade, and prognosis, making it a potential diagnostic and therapeutic target.
