Overview

Glycosidases (also known as glycoside hydrolases or glycosyl hydrolases) are a broad class of enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of glycosidic bonds in carbohydrates. They play essential roles in the digestion of dietary polysaccharides, degradation of biomass, processing of glycoconjugates, cellular defense mechanisms, and pathogenesis. Deficiencies in specific glycosidases can lead to inherited metabolic disorders such as lysosomal storage diseases.
