Glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor attachment 1 pseudogene 2 (GPAA1P2) is a human pseudogene, which is a DNA sequence homologous to a functional gene (GPAA1) but contains disabling mutations preventing it from encoding a functional protein product[1][3][5]. By formal nomenclature, pseudogenes like GPAA1P2 are not expected to encode proteins and generally do not have direct biological activity[3][5]. There is no report of this pseudogene being a therapeutically relevant receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other classic drug target. While some pseudogenes have been implicated in regulation of gene expression or as potential non-coding RNAs affecting parental gene function, there is no such evidence for GPAA1P2 specifically[2][5]. It should not be considered a canonical therapeutic target for drug development. Pseudogenes may sometimes regulate their functional counterparts or be expressed as non-coding RNAs, but most are considered nonfunctional relics[2][4][5]. No evidence exists of protein or functional RNA derived from GPAA1P2, and it is not listed among genes associated with disease, biomarkers, or drug interaction[1][5]. Protein-coding GPAA1 (the parental gene) is involved in GPI-anchor biosynthesis, but GPAA1P2 itself lacks these functions, as indicated by its "pseudogene" annotation[1]. GPAA1P2 is a processed pseudogene, not a protein-coding gene, and does not function as a canonical target molecule such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[1][3][5].
