Glycosylphosphatidylinositol biosynthesis protein Gwt1 (Gwt1) is an essential membrane-bound enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchors. These anchors are critical post-translational modifications that tether proteins to the cell surface in eukaryotes, playing a vital role in cell wall integrity and protein localization, especially in fungi. Gwt1 functions as an acyltransferase, specifically catalyzing the acylation of the inositol ring of glucosaminyl-phosphatidylinositol (GlcN-PI). It is a validated target for novel antifungals like Manogepix.
