01

Overview

Glycosyltransferases are a large family of enzymes (EC 2.4) that catalyze the transfer of sugar moieties from activated donor molecules to specific acceptor molecules, forming glycosidic bonds. They are essential for the biosynthesis and modification of glycans, playing a central role in protein glycosylation, glycolipid formation, cell signaling, immune recognition, and molecular stability. Defects in these enzymes can cause congenital disorders of glycosylation and other metabolic diseases. Some bacterial pathogens utilize glycosyltransferases to modify adhesin proteins for host colonization.
