Overview

Glyoxylate reductase 1 homolog (GLYR1) is a chromatin-associated nuclear protein functioning primarily as a nucleosome-destabilizing factor, a chromatin-protein adaptor, and a histone-binding protein[1][6][7]. It is recruited to active genes and regulates transcription through its interactions with chromatin, facilitating transcriptional activation and elongation processes[7][1][6]. GLYR1 positively regulates histone acetylation, participating in epigenetic regulation[3][7]. The protein has also been described as a putative oxidoreductase based on sequence homology, but its main characterized role in mammalian cells is transcriptional regulation linked to chromatin structure and accessibility rather than classic metabolic enzyme activity[1][6][7].
