Overview

Glyphosate is a synthetic organic compound used as a non-selective, systemic herbicide. Its chemical name is N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine and its molecular formula is C3H8NO5P. Glyphosate inhibits the enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), which is essential for the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids in plants, bacteria, and some other organisms. This pathway is not present in mammals. Glyphosate is primarily used in agriculture and landscaping for weed control, frequently found in formulations such as the commercial product "Roundup". It is not a therapeutic target or biological receptor; rather, it is a small molecule that acts on plant enzymes for the purpose of weed management[1][3][4][7].
