GM1 Ganglioside (GM1)

Target
GM1
Molecular classification
Glycosphingolipid, Receptor
01

Overview

GM1 ganglioside (monosialotetrahexosylganglioside) is a glycosphingolipid found in the outer leaflet of plasma membranes, especially abundant in neuronal tissues but also present on mucosal epithelial cells. It serves as a key receptor for certain bacterial toxins and viruses, notably cholera toxin and Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin. Within membrane rafts, GM1 participates in signaling pathways by associating with proteins such as G protein-coupled receptors, modulates ion transporters, and influences neuronal excitability. Antibodies against GM1 are implicated in disorders such as Guillain–Barré syndrome and multifocal motor neuropathy.
